Adoption of the law on the Ukrainian language

On April 25, 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language”. Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Parubii A.V., signed it on May 14, 2019. The current President Poroshenko P.A. intends to sign it immediately. After signing, the Law will enter into force. The transition period is 1.5 years. During this time, all requirements must be met.

The Law provides the translation of all websites into the state language. Sites may have the option of choosing an additional language, but only as an alternative. Online media should also change over to the state language. For non-compliance with the law, the perpetrators will incur administrative penalties. The considerable sum of fines has been established for owners who violate the requirements of the Law. For the Media, fines are much higher than for the rest. There is no criminal liability.

The Law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada obliges all cultural and sporting events, promotion of advertisement, information on the Internet pages and mobile applications to be in the state language of Ukraine.
